Query on BSA Long Lee Enfield?

#1 Post by Mike 01 »

Hi, I am hoping that someone on this forum will be able to help with my query. A work colleague of mine has inherited a .303 Enfield. It looks to me like a Long Lee of some description, fitted with what I think is a BSA No.9 aperture sight, but I am absolutely not an Enfield expert! I also haven't seen the rifle myself, so I attach some photos that my colleague sent to me. If someone can advise what type of rifle this is, and ideally suggest a very rough value, that would be much appreciated. I expect if will be best for my colleague to send the rifle to one of the RFDs who specialises in historic arms, rather than trying to dispose of it via a local RFD. Thanks.

Could be a CLLE
Arming the Country, one gun at a time.

Good deals with Paul101, Charlotte the flyer, majordisorder, Charlie Muggins, among others. Thanks everybody.

OUCH! Those mangled screws!

Looks like a BSA Mk1 fitted with a Parker 9G aperture sight.

BSA (Commercial, not military) Charger Loading Long Lee Enfield ("CLLE") fitted with an AGP 9G target sight.

May have been called up for military service at one point, because something has been ground off the top of the knox form - possibly a sold out of service mark or a gunsmith mark.

Nice rifle; the BSA commercials generally had a fine finish a nicely figured wood.

Value depends upon the bore condition. Can be anywhere £450-1200ish. Sadly the vast majority of Long Lees are thoroughly shot out, and can only be made to group using either cordite ammo or handloads with a bullet sufficient to grip whatever is left of the rifling. 9Gs fetch silly money on eBay, but shouldn't really as there are a lot of them around and fewer and fewer historic rifle shooters actually using them!

Which part of the country is the rifle in? Worth taking it to one of us Enfield specialist RFDs to get a proper assessment.

Many thanks for your very helpful comments. The rifle is in the north so my colleague would need to transport it south, I expect. If you could PM me with your RFD details please, I can pass them on. Thanks again - this forum was definitely a good way of finding out the answer!

This chap is up north.

I bought a CLLE in .22 from him a couple of years ago and at the time he had an interesting selection of old sporting and military rifles.
