Deer Stalking… reliable word of mouth recommendation from someone you know has undertaken such stalking being offered by a specific syndicate is best. Like other walks of life, stalking has its scammers. E.G., make sure there is deer, of the species sought, on the land being made available; that appropriate insurance is in place; that there is recourse for recompense if it all goes wrong. In addition, obtain and understand terms and conditions; consider the implications of allowing a syndicate leader to be a FAC mentor; make sure ‘coaches’ are suitably qualified; consider the quality of deer management, the construction & execution of a shooting plan and safety; determine if the land is over-shot.

If in doubt, contact BASC or similar.

Not usually and some will also declare it to HMRC for tax purposes and pay by bank transfer, however you usually get a brace plus beaters day. Picking up dogs men/women are paid more however you need to bring at least a couple of capable dogs. Kids get a tenner.

Larger shoot keepers may try and treat you like a t*@t, we have a local one that is well known for it, plus side is a 200 bird beaters day although I would not beat for such a person.Equally we have some fantastic locals shoots and I have seen guns give up a gun to a beater towards the end of the and load for them!

The pay has increased since I last time I did it in the 1990's.
Would not mind getting back into it

But do we really do it for the money? I would struggle to think of a better way to spend a winters Saturday.
