Why have some got a wee lever on the LHS of the sideplate and others not?

The "wee lever" is the turning handle on the end of a machine screw. As you turn it you loosen and then remove the fixing screw holding the side plates on.

No idea why ... but some people want them and others don't. I've seen them on other guns too.

Sidelocks sound a lot easier to repair than boxlocks.

Sounds like they are taken down easily for cleaning.

So if one wants a lever one can replace the screw?
