I am amazed, hitherto I have been (fairly) proud of my powers of observation.......... In all my 66 years this is the first lizard that I have seen wild in the UK, plenty of Grass Snakes, Adders, Slow worms. I wonder why I haven't seen a lizard before,

That is because they are prehistoric, along with snakes.
The common lizard lives for about 5 years.

However did you know dragonflies are the oldest known insect and that they roamed the earth before the dinosaurs did.
