I have just bought a second hand Ruger No. 1 single shot in 45-70. I'm loading up some 405 gn. lead bullets with 5744 powder. The American experts recommend between 24 and 28 grains of this powder, so I will start there. It will be interesting to see wht the trigger pull is like - mine was made in 2009, so it is one of the later ones.

The trigger is reasonably heavy on the No1 and does benefit from an upgrade, I swapped out the trigger for a 1lb pull Jard item on one quite recently however it was not cheap and took a degree of patience to fit and set it up.

I don't know which pressure group the Ruger No.1 comes under (weaker trapdoor rifles, standard pressure or modern rifle), but you can find the load data for .45-70 gov't using Accurate 5744 powder on page 63 in the link below. This is the published load data by Western Powders which includes load data for Accurate powder in aforementioned calibre.

For the weaker trapdoor rifles (max 19kpsi) the load data is 24.3gr to 27.0gr of Accurate 5744 with a 405gr lead FP boolit.
For standard pressure rifles (max 28kpsi) the load data is 30.6gr to 34.0gr of Accurate 5744 with a 405gr lead FP boolit.
For modern rifles (max 48kpsi) the load data is 36.0gr to 40.0gr of Accurate 5744 with a 405gr lead FP boolit.
