I want to fit something like this attached picture. You can get flat or it comes with 20 minutes of angle built in.

Like Triffid said, how far are you wanting to shoot and what scope will you be using? Is this for a 6.5CM? If you zero your scope for 100 yards then you will need around another 40moa to to get to 1,000 yds. The Ruger seems to come with a 20moa rail as standard so you will need 20 moa vertical adjustment available with your scope. This is quite within the range of many scopes but not all so if you opt for a flat rail you may find your scope doesn't have enough adjustment to get you to 1,000 yards.
If you opt for a 20moa rail on top of the Ruger 20moa rail you will certainly get the range but may find you now don't have enough down elevation to zero at 100yds.

Do you need a rear extended mount? Rail on rail all looks a bit high to me.

Hi the scope is a Vortex Viper HS-T.
6-24X50 VMR- 1 (MOA)

Recommend me a a suitable set of rings I guess they will be shooting out to 1000yards and may be 1200. I know some of them occasionally go up to Scotland and shoot out to a mile they also go to Bisley and shoot a 1000 yards. I doubt I will shoot out to a mile but possibly 1000yards and may be 1200. I guess the bulk of my shooting is likely to be 100 yards and 300 then 600 yards.

Up to now the bulk of my shooting has been with a No4 a MAS36 Swedish Mauser's a P14 and a Steyr SSG 69 in .308. This is a whole new ball park for me.

Your Vortex scope has a total of 65moa vertical adjustment - so about 30moa is usable for elevation. Your rifle already has 20moa built in to it's rail, so you have an effective usable elevation adjustment of around 50 moa.

Just guessing at the numbers, if you are shooting a 6.5 142gn SMK at 2,700fps with a BC of .61 and you are zeroed at 100 yards you will require about 30moa adjustment to get to 1,000yds and around 42 moa to get to 1,200yds and 64moa for 1,500yds.

So with your scope and the inbuilt 20moa rail you should get out to 1,200 with a bit to spare but not much past 1,300yds

I would recommend a set of Burris signature rings with the offset inserts. I have these on a .6.5-284 and a 6br. They hold well, won't mark the scope and will give you any extra elevation you will ever need and can help optically centre your scope and adjust for cant if needed.

So mounting it on the RPR with it's built-in 20 Minute rail gives you about 50 Minutes of internal adjustment.

But the scope has an additional 50 MOA of vertical 'aim-off' on the reticle (when set to 18x magnification). 30 minutes below the horizontal and 20 minutes above. So that's 110 MOA, which would get you out to a mile or more.
But you can only access this if you use 20 or 30 MOA rings AND use a combination of turret adjustment AND elevation aiming off on the reticle. Which makes things complicated.

If I go for the Burris rings what height would you recommend.

Personally I like to keep things low, but I think the medium height would be your safest bet. With the medium size you should still have clearance for the object lens even if you you use full offset inserts, you also have an adjustable cheek piece so should be able to find a comfortable head position.

Keep us posted. And just as an aside - If you zero it at 100 yards you will need to come up 13-14 minutes for 600 yards. So if you make a tall target to shoot at 100 yards and you will next be shooting at 600 yards, you would need your bullet to strike 14-15 inches high on the 100 yd target. This should get you well on the target at 600 yards first shot.
