GS Custom Monolithics

#1 Post by Ovenpaa »

I have an order of GS Custom Monolithic (Solid) bullets coming in, as this involves originator export certificates and some jumping through hoops the order is a couple of weeks away so would anyone else be interested in some at the same time?

For those that have not come across GS Custom Bullets they produce probably the highest BC and most accurately machined bullets in the world for a range of purposes including hunting and target use and supply full load data as well. http://gscustom.co.za/

They are also very competitively priced however it is worth remembering they cannot be used on MoD ranges including Bisley as the ricochet characteristics have not yet been tested.

These bullets as awesome and proven in so many spheres!
:goodjob: :shakeshout:

Turned on very accurate lathes using special copper alloy ...machined to 2-5 microns tolerance
The detail and quality control on those bullets ave to be seen to be believed.

They require you accept some new "rules" because of the driving bands, the accuracy and materials
So read the articles - they will make you think!
Start here
http://www.gsgroup.co.za/newrules.html

As guideline remember
1. Barrel Twist is crucial : it is to properly stabilise the bullet due to the copper bullets being longer than lead weight equivalents

2. GS Customs fly at the speed 1 weight class down but hit 1 weight class above
for example the GS Custom 308130HV080 does 3,170 out of 24" barrel ieGS 130gn
that is the speed of a standard 125 gn but it performs externally and terminally more like a 155gn.

3. The shanks of the bullets are .300 and the driving bands are .308 so effective bearing surface friction is about 30% of a standard bullet

My biggest game animal taken with a GS Custom
http://www.gsgroup.co.za/galtimstewart.html

Gerard also has plenty of little "nuggets"
You will find oddities in our line of bullets such as the fact that we make two distinctly different 7 mm bullet sizes. If you research the CIP specifications you will find that 7 mm Remington Magnum and 7 x 57 are not the same size bore or groove. Many such examples exist and we do not make calibre recommendations without good reasons. It is important for optimum results that you use the bullet that is best suited to your particular calibre.

Jees-those are seriously tight turning tolerances!
How does the accuracy of these compare to what is being used, for example, atm in the current F/TR comp. scene? Is it likely that in the not too distant future a dedicated rig using Monoliths will be used at the non-MOD ranges like Diggle and Blair and a 'standard' rig, using the 'basic' 155.5 Bergers (or similar) being used for the rest of the comp. rounds?
If this is the case would this development deter the average Joe from entering the competition scene, as they might consider that they would be at a serious disadvantage from the start. Might swell the numbers for the S-class comps. thou.

As for accuracy - provided you have a GOOD barrel and follow the rules / guidelines for twist / weight I found them to be the most consistent and accurate rounds I have ever shot. :shakeshout:

Why a good barrel?!?
Well a older gun that has a "oval" barrel can force a lead bullet to comply with the barrel shape!
Copper - and the GS Custom bullet is not that compliant!

The idea of a specialist FTR rig/ammo combo is appealling and tempting tongueout
But would add alot of complexity and cost to the shooter
1. Decision making during matches and windage would be more complex
2. And the practice regimes would be very difficult to implement :o

For feedback from others on accuracy - see this link on the site
http://www.gsgroup.co.za/accuracy.html

Remember the numerous examples here are from hunting rifles and hunting bullets and often "heavy" calibres and not F-class type rigs

Tim, I reckon you should be forced to shoot next years Euros with a buggered old L39 and RG just so some of the other competitors stand a fighting chance  :run:

Know that is a neat lookin' thing.

Out of interest, how'd they make 'em? I mean, I know how a lathe works, but I guess there's some kind of industrial output, as I assume it's not one bloke on one lathe churning these things out.
Wait, so I can own a .55 calibre Boys anti-tank rifle, but not a .22 pistol?
