Been looking at various crowns at the dangerous end of the barrel and after discussing with Ovenpaa and Christel was curious as to why you wouldn't have a convex (sticking out, domed) crown rather than a concave one?

I believe I'm right in thinking the idea is to make sure that the gases behind the bullet needs to be dispersed evenly, so why wouldn't a convex crown work better than a concave one?

I don't know the definitive answer but it would make the crown very likely to get damaged!!

Ha ha, well it was good to meet you, unfortunately I was given a load of peoples names in about 5 mins and names aren't my strong point! I'm sure we'll meet again soon, perhaps a little more formally!

Christel got me a peaked beanie hat for Christmas, thje sort of thing that makes people look like erm.. well odd. So I wear it back to front if I take the car to work to keep my head warm, I can see members of staff in the office visibly cringe when I turn up wearing it.

Wish I had known, I would have got one years ago :lol:

Back to crowning, I have thought about this an I tend to agree with 20series, convex crowning would be more susceptible to damage and the angle of the junction of crown to bore would be sharper with possibly negative impact on the gasses as they exit.

Just a guess....

My undrstanding is that it is to prevent damage other wise why crown at all but I might be wrong.
