I picked up a second-hand .223 Remmy 700 Police at one of the Bisley shows.

Wasn't a lot of money but the most accurate gun I have.

Shoots 69 grain SMK's brilliantly and even had it out to 900 yards.

Another vote for the Savage BVSS - Very under rated rifles. And the CZ 527 .223 is very capable for not a lot of money. My 527 shoots GGG 62gn military ammo well with regular sub moa groups at 600 yards.

Lots to think about! Thank you all for the advise and recommendations so far, can't believe how helpful and friendly this forum is. I am just trying to do as much research as possible during lockdown, once things start to return to normal I will be able to go and view guns properly.

I can see I will need to put a lot more time into researching the right gun for my needs, so many things to take into account with regards to ammunition, barrel types, length of barrel etc.

Just make sure you get a newer 527! The older version is 1 in 12 twist and therefore less versatile than the newer 1 in 9 twist.

Agree - I have a 1/9 varmint barrel with a set trigger.

Yep, CZ 527 here too. It is an older varmint model which came with the 1:9 twist barrel as the non-varmint ones were 1:12. In my experience it shoots 52gr SMK up to 69gr Scenar very well. Have not tried bullets outside this weight range.

CZ 527's seem very well priced!

If the 425 is anything to go by which I use at my local club then it is definitely one I will look into.

As Dromia said, basically faster twist for the longer bullets.

As a rule I wouldn't buy one with a twist rate of less than 1:9", preferably 1:8" or better and you'll be able to shoot most of the heavier bullets as well as the lighter stuff.
Don't worry about 'over stabilising' the lighter bullets and if anyone tells you they have heard of fast .223Rem bullets being disintegrated by spinning too fast then I wouldn't believe that or ask for proof.

What Mattnall said...............1:8 or even 1:7 twist is the way to go for target shooting with a 223.
And I'd suggest a 30" barrel if you want to push it out to 1000yds.............

It's a long held tradition on here, we love helping folk spend their money

My advice is don't rush out and spend your hard earned cash before you have maybe tried a few different rifles in person. I don't know what your club is like but at Oundle everyone is dead friendly and will let you try out theirs to see if it works for you.

Also don't forget to save some money for a decent scope and rings.
