H&K develops smaller-calibre SA-80 assault rifle for training
by Richard Jones

An in-house development by Heckler & Koch (H&K) of a new self-loading .22 Rimfire calibre variant of the standard British Army SA-80 (L85A2) assault rifle, normally chambered for the 5.56x45 mm NATO cartridges, is to enter British service soon, according to two contracts recently awarded by the UK Ministry of Defence (MoD)....

I doubt we will ever see versions we can buy, however it's interesting that it is happening. It shows a determination to stick with the SA80 for a long while to come.

Someone was looking at making one a few years ago, I supplied the magazines for the prototype. For some reason it didn't get to production.
Hopefully this will go the distance and make it to the retail market eventually or someone will have a good look inside and make a copy of it.

The only reason I can think of, is so they don't get mixed up with the "real" magazines...

Mine is nearly sorted but it obviously won’t be anywhere as slick at the real thing!
It’s a Remington 597 butchered into an airsoft body (I have a defence).

Still needs some fettling to get it all lined up, at the moment it just takes the 597 mag but at some point I might try and hack something together out of the airsoft magazine shell.

Is it perfect, hell no, but I wanted a lockdown project

How do they currently work? A conversion kit?

It is the same magazine as the L41A1 .22 conversion kit mag, probably easier and cheaper to use stocks of existing mags than design and tool up for a new one.
