I've tried search and the info on CAS on the forum is limited (or I'm not searching right).
I've also tried google, but it's nearly all US centred, which doesn't help my current query.
I'm looking at getting into Cowboy action - I have a variation in for a 357 rifle and black powder pistols - I don't have a shotgun cert though.
So I'm trying to find out what section one shotgun (as I have a free slot) would fit the bill, whilst not bankrupting me.
Any suggestions, or direction to further useful information would be much appreciated.

Ill type it here again, if you want cheap, then a sxs shotgun would be your best bet, get it as a sec1 and you can have shorter barrels

then its lever or pump... lever will be cheaper than pump

The only lever-action shotguns i'm aware of over here are the FQ Bobcat, Adler A110 and Chiappa and Norinco 1887 copies, all of which are more expensive than your average pump?

For CAS I think most people have a hammered SbS with 18" barrels


When I briefly looked into it they seemed a very accommodating lot though and providing it wasn't giving you a crazy advantage then you could start off pretty much with whatever you had to hand. Lots of people willing to lend the revolvers and rifles too (obviously can't do that with S1 shotguns though )

The place I shot last year allowed any SbS as long as it was non ejector, or pump loaded with 2. Going to join the club and put in for a BP pistol and underlever.

I am reffering to CAS/SASS legal guns. we will of course let you use whatever you have for awhile, with the expectation you get something 'legal' in due course.

the only SASS legal pump action is the winchester 1897 and clones there of. good luck for getting change out of £1200 for one and that will be at least 50 years old.

the only SASS legal lever action is the winchester 1887 and clones thereof. these are rarer to see in this country, but a new chiappa will cost you around £1k and thats usually without the load 2 converter. 2nd hand, around £800 with all the bits for a nice one.

this is why I say a lever action will be cheaper than a pump.

An 18" barreled sxs will come under section 1, most sxs's we see used at BWSS matches (sanctioned by SASS) are sec 2 shotties. and most are not hammered, but its probably close.

as for accommodating and friendly, yes, turn up, and we will get you shooting, that's the main thing. most of us will lend whatever you need, except for a hat. get your own hat and do not touch mine.
