Moderator Repaint?

#1 Post by Mash »

Good afternoon,

I’ve got a second hand Parker Hale sound moderator for my 1022, can I give this a rub down and repaint? If so what’s the recommendation on paints?

Thank you Dellboy. I’ll have a look and see might be able to do some other bits with the cerokote.

Repainted my T3. Spun it in the lathe and took it right down to bare metal, then etch primed it before using cammo paint as a finish. Looks good and is non reflective.

The secret is in the prep. Get back to bare metal then DEGREASE THOROUGHLY. Don't touvh it with your hands after de-grease. Best de-greaser is "Panel wipe" from a motor factors, but white spirit will do at a push.

Next step is acid etch primer as above and leave for 24 hours to cure. I always apply gentle heat with a heatgun before and during spraying for both primer and top coats.

Apply several light top-coats as directed on the can. Leave for 24 hours and repeat.

Hycote is great, or Simoniz tough black. Also had good results with Toolstations Industrial spray.

Trouble with those covers is they hold the heat in and the moderator takes ages to cool down.

Why is that a problem though? The covers mitigate mirage for much longer and stop you from burning your hand when removing it, which are the only issues I can think of for normal use?

I found that if the mod was left for a couple of minutes it cooled down and another 3 shots could be taken. With the cover on it took forever to cool down and I found myself shooting through a hot barrel all the time. Don't know if it affected the POA but the groups were certainly bigger.
