Ah, now I realise why that question threw me, this is not a club, it is a forum.

So I guess no need for one and no we do not have one.

:)

Sorry, being a bit obtuse, I realise this is not a club.

My question should have read, Do we have any Club Full Bore Secretaries on here.

Egg,

You mean someone who is the secretary of a fullbore rifle club?

May I ask why?

Cheers

Nothing too bad, I have just taken over the role at my club and I would like to pick the collective brain so I sound like I know what I am talking about.

My experience of club secretaries is from the membership perspective and my impression is it can be a thankless task that seems to slowly grind down the most spirited of souls.

All I would say is be realistic in what you agree to do, offer timely and concise replies to any questions asked of you, and accept help if it is offered.

Good luck!

Egg,

I remember one of our ex-secretaries saying "It's not like being the secretary of a tennis club."

He was right - there is the potential for a lot of stuff to 'bounce back' on you if your members step out of line.

I'm only the Membership Sec. but I have the resposibility for informing the police if shooters don't re-new their membership or fail to make their one mandatory visit per year. Plus I have to submit new applicants for police vetting and confirm 'need' when variations are submitted.

It's all simple stuff but can you imagine if Bird (Cumbria massacre) had been a lapsed member of your club and you hadn't 'dotted all the 'i's and crossed all the 't's?

Cheers
Vince

Ovenpaa is spot on, it can be a thankless task.

My advice, from somebody who was a rifle club Club Secretary for 14 years, is that committees, no matter how well intentioned, never actually do anything other than talk, never make decisions and always blame somebody who does.

As far as I was concerned I ran the club as a benign dictatorship, I took the decisions, I did the work and I told the committee afterwards. If there was any doubt as to whether the committee had actually approved it, I would refer them to the minutes of a previous meeting in which it was clearly stated that this was whatever course of action was required. Of course I also wrote those minutes !!!!!

Good luck and don't let them grind you down, you are in charge.
