Just giving the Benelli a wipe over after shooting a couple hundred slug over the weekend. From 25 to 100 meters you get surprising accuracy out of smoothbore!

It's almost like having a full bore semi rifle again!

If you haven't tried it, you really should chase the possibility of having a go!!

Oh I don't know, it usually takes a few pellets to get them.

Wish i had the money for that!! The only place i can get any at the moment wants £22 a box :G

Back in just 2009 i rattled through 150 slugs on the electric reactive targets on the field firing range at Otterburn which was great fun, particularly as the slugs were only £9.50 a box

The sooner i get somewhere to put a reloading press the better!

A mate uses a shotgun and solid slug for shooting deer (note i didn't say stalk) and more than a few stalkers have got vocal in the past. They soon shut up when he completes the DSC1 shooting test - easily within 2-3inches: prone, kneeling or sitting at 70yds, off sticks at 40yds. It's hard to argue when they are literally knocked onto their back when he shoots them.

With the performance from 12 gauge slugs I wonder what kind of performance you would get if you made a smooth barrel for a 5.56 or 7.62 semi-auto... Or perhaps a new wildcat cartridge designed specifically to emulate rifle performance in a smooth bore 'rifle'.

Fun fact: Although you often hear people talk about 'rifled' slug' (at right):



...this isn't rifling at all, the fins simply allow some compression in the bore so that the slug can be used with all kinds of choke, increasing accuracy that way. No spin is imparted on the slug (either from friction with the bore or with the air in flight), the fins are cut in a spiral pattern simply for marketing purposes!
