Deer Stalking… reliable word of mouth recommendation from someone you know has undertaken such stalking being offered by a specific syndicate is best. Like other walks of life, stalking has its scammers. E.G., make sure there is deer, of the species sought, on the land being made available; that appropriate insurance is in place; that there is recourse for recompense if it all goes wrong. In addition, obtain and understand terms and conditions; consider the implications of allowing a syndicate leader to be a FAC mentor; make sure ‘coaches’ are suitably qualified; consider the quality of deer management, the construction & execution of a shooting plan and safety; determine if the land is over-shot.

If in doubt, contact BASC or similar.

Rats

Hi all,

I have a bit of a problem & am looking for a bit of advice.

Although I hold both a SGC & a FAC I'm purely a target shooter.

Over the last few nights the Mrs has seen several "big bloody rats" running across the patio & taking refuge under the log shed.

She's giving me grief about getting rid of them & shooting them would I feel be the best option.

The problem I have is that the wood shed is sat on a concrete plinth with brick walls either side & stone flags under foot.

I have several 12 bores & rifles from .22 to .308 but am worried about ricochet both for myself & patio windows etc.

Would a silenced .410 shotgun be the tool for the job or is air rifle to be safe?

I own neither & don't want to but the wrong thing & either have the mrs kill be for blinding myself or taking all the windows out at the back of the house.

Poison isn't an option because of young kids & pets.

Cheers,

Mick

Sounds like a good reason to add an air rifle to the armoury, with eye protection of course.

.410 shotgun (with light and laser if you can attach them!) - works really well and I've not had any problem with ricochets off concrete bases or stone walls.

I'd second the choice of air rifle just t errr on the side of caution. It will be more than capable of dispatching them without too much worry about ricochet

Air rifle all the way !! Lure them to your killing zone with birdseed mixed with lard but put something in thd mix to make it too heavy to carry away !

What about .22 Rat shot? Never use it myself, but my Grandfather liked it a lot.

Peanut butter makes them stop long enough to get a shot off as it sticks to their pallet.

Should be good sport!

Thanks for all the opinions :goodjob:

I have been advised that shooting them COULD make matters worse sign92

So I've asked a proffesional pest control officer (council) to have a look next week, if he thinks shooting would be beneficial I think I'll be purchasing a 9mm garden gun.

Cheers all,

Mick.
