help needed - Odd plate on Danish Snider

#1 Post by Ovenpaa »

Can anyone help in identifying this plate on the upper side of the butt? It reminds me of a mount for a tangent sight however this would mean the rifle would have been shot as a back gun and that does not make any sense, plus the foresight is not suitable.

I have not tried to take the plate off so I have no idea what is underneath it.

Just think of the hidden secrets you might find under there-then again, it might just be 150 year old dust. No harm in having a peak tho :good:

No dark hidden secrets. It is a metal plate let into the stock and acts as a keeper plate for a piece of brass. It is the sort of thing you would expect to see engraved with a name or number however this one is as plain as the day it was fitted.

I will post a picture in a bit.

Here it is.

Does anyone have any ideas on this other than a place to stamp a number or name?
