7.92 or 8x57 or 8mm

Hi all,
a small query

my variation is for a 7.92 calibre (I already have a K98 7.92) And just the other day bought a 7.92 Persian mauser.
when it arrived at my local RFD (Who doesnt deal with rifles in anyway except getting them sent to him) the paperwork inside the box said 8x57 of which he rightly queried, but I made him aware it was also known as 7.92 or 8.mm.

Had a call from the FEO this morning querying the 8x57, I tried to explain but he would look into it.
I know when I buy the rounds the privi stuff is marked 8mm, I told him this as well


Anyone have a definitive answer from a reliable book that could be posted on the site should there be any problems?.

I'm almost sure that in some Home Office guidance somewhere that it is accepted that 7.92 and 8x57 when related to WW2 Mausers of any manufacture, is regarded as the same caliber.......

As Great Britain is a member of the CIP, it is most certainly the official CIP denomination who should apply.

CIP european calibers were specified from their bullet diameter (8x+4S, 9,
x62,10,75x68) and the case lenght (now american denominations are accepted (.
08Winchester, .260Remington, .
00Savage) in the recnt revisions).

There is TWO 8v57: The original one (I. fir Infanterie patrone forGew88 Komission) of 8mm diameter. This was later increased to 8,20mm to create the IS (InfanterieSpitz) round. The official denomination is 8x57IS, or by abreviation 8x57S.
Firearms in original 8mm calibre are very scarce, some old european hiunting rilles.

7,92 represent the bore diameter of the barrel.

All the same, but not all Constabularies see it that way. When I applied for my first 7.92 I was asked by my plod "Why do you want maxium machine gun ammo ?"

I said "Because I have a Maxim"... not really
