I've never done any stalking, so sorry if this is a daft question...is there a reason for not carrying the rifles in slips to protect them until needed?

Reminds us of the time in Bongo-Bongo back in 1863 when we were ambushed by the fuzzie-wuzzies. Afore we had time to uncase our .577 rifles from their leather cases almost half the regiment were goners...

I think you'll find the reason tiff doesnt, is down to the weight of his rifle, iirc it's about 19lbs.

This very interesting report has tweaked my curiosity; so I'll risk a few more daft questions (to Tiff or any other stalker)...

...I noticed that neither were using moderators, but still managed to get two deer each in quick succession - So, does the noise not scatter the herd after the first shot, or do they take time to react? Or do they only scatter so far that a second shot from the same position is possible?

Also, to be able to go to a new area and shoot un-escorted like that; what qualifications or courses do you need to do? And do you get an 'orientation' on arrival about where and in what direction you can shoot?

And, I'm assuming the shoot is part of an annual cull (?), are you given a 'quota' of how many and what type of deer to take? And what happens to the deer...does the meat get processed?

Just to make it clear; I'm not looking to make any comment about 'culling'...just genuinely interested.

It's intrigued us too: once we can consistently put all our shots into a single MoA (we currently get an occasional flier) we might have a look at one of them deer stalking courses..

That's very interesting...all seems well organised, and it's specially interesting looking at the specific differences between the Arran and the Dorset shoot...

...both look well managed but I can see why the lads, being young and fit, chose to go all the way to Arran.
