Laser Engraving

#1 Post by AR15 »

What a pulse tuned fiber laser sounds like.
This is engraving our USA made lower receiver.

This device is also capable of material removal and we use it to cut sharp cornered text and logos, unlike traditional engraving that uses a circular cutting tool. It can easily cut to the ATF compliant marking depth.

I do like laser engraving and have just moved to a new company for our work, one thing that impressed me was the tonal changes that can be made to stainless steel, you can effectively engrave with a grey tone scale.

Yep, its a powerful tool for sure.
Laser machining for surface texture and indeed plunging cuts right through metal is very handy . The 20w Fiber laser being used in the vid will eat through 7075T6 no problem on a few passes. You could skeletonise an object with it no problem.
And that patterns you cut can all have nice razor sharp edges too :)
It will indeed make a 3d representation of a 2d image using greysacale as Z depth instructions.

Here white is raised and black recessed. Now the cutting resolution is defined by the greyscale bit depth of the image :)

Try machining that conventionally. :(

We had all our engraving and etching done on a laser cutter and it looked superb-just upgraded to a much larger machine that is far more accurate and faster as it uses a fibre optic head with hydrogen gas and b****r me it would laser etch wallhead-well it does but it is so faint even after sending it through twice! Got the techies scratching there heads over it as we speak.
Older machine used CO2 (I think)

Is it YAG? Fiber is much better than YAG or CO2. It should still mark regardless though.

Fibers will weld, engrave, cut, they are used to manufacture Stents even.

Thats some fine detail for sure.

Would be interested in getting my three AR receivers done. Ballpark costs?...

YAG? No its fibre FOL-3015 AJ 4kW
I watched a demo at an exhibition in Düsseldorf a few years back and they were laser etching the skeletal structure of a leaf in crumpled copper sheets, bloody amazing. Also cutting peoples names right through match heads-still have mine somewhere.
